Tsuga canadensis Rugg’s Washington Dwf

Tsuga canadensis ‘Rugg’s Washington Dwarf’ is a classic dwarf eastern hemlock discovered and selected in the Pacific Northwest for its dense, compact growth and excellent garden durability. Unlike the towering native species, this cultivar forms a low, mounded to slightly irregular habit that brings the soft texture of hemlock into small-scale landscapes. Fine, dark green needles are tightly arranged along short branches, giving it a refined, composed appearance. It grows best in partial shade with cool, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA Zones 3–7, it develops slowly and remains compact for many years, making it ideal for rock gardens and collector plantings.
