Wisteria frutescens Amethyst Falls
Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’ is a refined native wisteria selection introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum as a more manageable non-invasive alternative to aggressive Asian species. In late spring to early summer, it produces cascading clusters of soft lavender-purple flowers with a light fragrance, often repeating sporadically through the season. Unlike its invasive relatives, this cultivar has a restrained growth habit and does not overwhelm structures or surrounding plants. It grows best in full sun with well-drained soil and a moderate growth rate. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9, it typically reaches 10–15 feet tall and is ideal for trellises, arbors, and native-focused landscapes.
