Tsuga canadensis Stewart’s Gem
Tsuga canadensis ‘Stewart’s Gem’ is a treasured miniature eastern hemlock selected for its extremely tight, rounded form and slow, deliberate growth. This cultivar is valued for maintaining its compact shape over time, making it one of the smallest hemlock selections available. Dense, deep green needles create a fine-textured mound that looks polished year-round. It grows best in partial shade with cool, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA Zones 3–7, it remains very small even with age and is especially prized in alpine gardens, containers, and curated conifer collections.
