Juniperus chinensis Saybrook Gold
Juniperus chinensis ‘Saybrook Gold’ is a distinctive evergreen conifer valued for its bright golden-yellow foliage and broad, spreading habit. New growth emerges vivid gold, creating a striking contrast with the deeper green interior foliage, while the color is particularly intense when the plant receives adequate sunlight. Its layered, somewhat irregular branching gives it a naturalistic appearance that works well in both formal and informal landscapes.
This cultivar is a relatively slow-growing selection and develops into a broad, dense evergreen over time. It is an excellent choice for adding year-round structure and a strong splash of color to mixed conifer plantings, foundation beds, rock gardens, slopes, and specimen plantings. Like many Chinese junipers, it is adaptable once established and tolerates heat, drought, and a range of soil conditions provided drainage is good.
‘Saybrook Gold’ performs best in full sun, where its golden coloration is strongest and the plant maintains its densest growth. It can tolerate some light shade, but reduced sunlight may result in greener foliage and a less compact habit.
