Cedrus deodara Pendula
Cedrus deodara ‘Pendula’ is a dramatic evergreen conifer prized for its strongly weeping branches, cascading growth habit and graceful, irregular silhouette. Its long, pendulous branches are clothed in soft, blue-green to grey-green needles, creating a distinctive architectural specimen with year-round interest.
Unlike upright forms of deodar cedar, ‘Pendula’ develops a naturally drooping habit, with its ultimate shape and height influenced by how it is trained and supported. When staked, it can develop a taller, sculptural form; when allowed to spread, its branches cascade and may trail along the ground. This makes it an excellent choice for specimen planting, where its unusual form can be appreciated.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates some dry conditions but performs best with adequate moisture during prolonged dry periods. Avoid waterlogged sites and allow sufficient room for its spreading branches. Minimal pruning is generally required, although occasional training may be used to achieve the desired shape.
With its cascading branches and distinctive sculptural character, ‘Pendula’ is an outstanding choice for adding movement, texture and year-round structure to the garden.
