Calluna vulgaris Winter Chocolate

Calluna vulgaris ‘Winter Chocolate’ is a compact Scotch heather prized for foliage that deepens to rich bronze and chocolate tones during cold weather, then lightens again as temperatures warm. This evergreen shrub forms a low, mounded habit that provides year-round texture and winter interest when much of the garden is dormant. It grows best in full sun, where color is strongest, and requires acidic, well-drained soil to thrive. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8, it typically reaches about 12–18 inches tall and spreads wider over time, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, slopes, and sunny borders.
