Pinus thunbergii Kotobuki
Pinus thunbergii ‘Kotobuki’ is a compact, upright Japanese black pine traditionally used in formal Japanese gardens and container culture. Selected for its narrow, columnar habit, it offers vertical structure while maintaining the species’ rugged character. Dark green needles and sturdy branching create a dignified, architectural appearance that responds well to training and pruning. It grows best in full sun with well-drained soil and has a slow to moderate growth rate. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8, it is well suited for specimens, containers, and Asian-inspired landscape designs.
