Pinus thumbergii Shirome Janome
Pinus thunbergii ‘Shirome Janome’ is a distinctive Japanese black pine selection prized for its variegated needles marked with creamy yellow bands. The name Shirome Janome, meaning “white snake’s eye” in Japanese, refers to this unusual ringed pattern, which has made the cultivar a long-standing favorite in bonsai culture. When young, the variegation is most pronounced, creating strong visual interest against the dark green needles. It grows best in full sun with excellent drainage and benefits from careful candle pruning to maintain form. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8, it grows slowly and is especially valued by collectors and bonsai enthusiasts.
