Pinus densiflora Burke’s Red Varigated

Burke’s Variegated Red Japanese Pine adds a foot or more in height per year with a majestic, upright, irregular form reaching maybe 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide when all grown up. A truly glowing tree in the landscape, it features whorls of variegated bright green needles decorated with bands of light butter-yellow in spring becoming more vibrant in summer. When looking at a whorl from above, the circular pattern of variegation looks like a “dragon’s eye,” hence one of the common names for this variety. The foliage does not burn in winter, is variegated year round, and contrasts beautifully with the orange-red exfoliating bark. Adaptable and easy to grow, give this shining beauty plenty of sun and well-drained soil and watch it grow to become a major attraction and conversation in the landscape
