Picea mariana Nana
Picea mariana ‘Nana’ is a classic dwarf selection of black spruce, chosen for its compact habit and fine-textured evergreen foliage. While the species is native to boreal bogs and northern forests of North America, this cultivar was selected to bring that rugged durability into a garden-scale plant. It forms a dense, rounded to slightly irregular mound with short, deep green needles. Best grown in full sun with cool, evenly moist, well-drained soil, it develops slowly and predictably. Hardy in USDA Zones 2–6, it remains small for decades and is especially valued in cold-climate gardens and conifer collections.
