Juniperus rigida

Juniperus rigida, commonly known as temple juniper, is a stiff-needled evergreen species native to Japan, Korea, and northeastern China. Historically planted around temples and shrines, it is valued for its upright form, sharp blue-green needles, and exceptional durability. This species develops an open, upright to irregular habit and grows slowly but steadily over time. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and is highly tolerant of cold, wind, and poor soils. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–8, it matures into a small to medium-sized tree with strong architectural presence.
