Picea abies Aarburg
Picea abies ‘Aarburg’ is a remarkable weeping selection of Norway Spruce discovered in the Swiss town of Aarburg, where its unusual growth habit set it apart from typical upright forms. Rather than developing a central leader, this cultivar produces long, cord-like branches that twist, trail, and cascade freely, creating a plant that behaves more like a living fabric than a traditional tree.
Its form is highly dependent on how it is grown—left unstaked, it spreads outward in a low, flowing mound that hugs the ground; when trained upward, it transforms into a narrow vertical specimen with dramatic, pendulous drapery. This responsiveness makes ‘Aarburg’ as much a design element as a plant, allowing gardeners to shape its presence over time.
The deep green needles are held densely along the trailing stems, giving weight and texture to its cascading habit. Best grown in full sun with well-drained soil, it performs reliably in colder climates and develops increasing character with age. ‘Aarburg’ is especially valued in collector gardens and landscape settings where individuality and movement are desired—no two specimens ever grow quite the same.
