Chamaecyparis thyoides Little Jamie

Chamaecyparis thyoides ‘Little Jamie’ is a charming dwarf selection of Atlantic white cedar, valued for its compact size, fine texture, and soft blue-green foliage. Unlike the tall, columnar form of the species, ‘Little Jamie’ develops slowly into a small, dense evergreen with a rounded to broadly conical habit, making it especially useful in smaller landscapes and specialty conifer gardens.

The foliage consists of tiny, overlapping scale-like leaves arranged in delicate sprays along the branches. New growth can have a brighter blue-green appearance before maturing to a deeper blue-green, giving the plant subtle seasonal variation while maintaining its evergreen character throughout the year.

‘Little Jamie’ performs best in full sun to partial shade and appreciates evenly moist, well-drained soil. Atlantic white cedar naturally occurs in wet, acidic environments, and this cultivar is particularly well suited to soils that retain moisture without becoming stagnant. Consistent moisture is important during establishment and periods of summer drought.

With its slow growth and naturally compact habit, ‘Little Jamie’ requires little pruning and makes an excellent specimen for a rock garden, trough or container, foundation planting, woodland edge, or mixed conifer collection. Its fine foliage also provides an appealing contrast to broader-leaved evergreens and coarser-textured conifers.
