Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Aurora’

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Aurora’ is a distinctive dwarf Hinoki cypress valued for its finely textured foliage and subtle golden coloration. The dense, overlapping sprays combine rich green with creamy yellow to golden tones, giving the plant a soft, luminous appearance without the intensity of some of the brighter yellow Hinoki cultivars.

‘Aurora’ develops a compact, somewhat irregular habit with tightly layered branches. Its intricate foliage provides excellent texture throughout the year, while the combination of green and golden tones makes it particularly effective when planted alongside blue or dark-green conifers. Like other Hinoki cypress cultivars, its character becomes more pronounced as the plant matures.

This is a slow-growing evergreen that is well suited to smaller landscapes and specialty conifer collections. It performs best in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. Some protection from intense afternoon sun can be helpful in hot climates, particularly where soils become dry. Avoid poorly drained locations.

‘Aurora’ works especially well as a specimen in rock gardens, Japanese-style gardens, mixed conifer borders, and containers. Its relatively small size and slow growth also make it useful where a refined evergreen is desired without requiring frequent pruning.
