Picea glauca Hobbit
Picea glauca ‘Hobbit’ is a very slow-growing, miniature cultivar of white spruce valued for its compact size and dense, finely textured foliage. Short, closely spaced branches create a rounded to broadly conical form, while the rich green needles maintain the classic spruce character of the species in a much smaller package.
With its restrained growth and naturally tidy habit, ‘Hobbit’ is well suited to small gardens, rock gardens, troughs, containers, and conifer collections. It also makes an interesting foreground plant where its diminutive scale allows its dense branching and fine texture to be appreciated up close.
Mature Size: Approximately 2–3’ tall × 2–3’ wide
Growth Rate: Very slow
Soil: Moist, well-drained soil
Uses: Rock gardens, troughs, containers, small gardens, foreground planting, conifer collections
‘Hobbit’ is a good example of how dramatically the form and scale of a familiar forest tree can change through dwarf selection. Its slow pace and compact habit make it particularly useful where a spruce is desired but space is limited.
