Chamaecyparis obtusa Gracilis
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Gracilis’ is a graceful cultivar of Hinoki cypress valued for its slender, upright habit, layered branching, and rich green, scale-like foliage. Unlike the extremely narrow forms of Hinoki cypress, ‘Gracilis’ develops a more naturally irregular, architectural silhouette, with branches arranged in attractive horizontal layers that give the plant depth and character.
A relatively slow-growing evergreen, ‘Gracilis’ is well suited to use as a specimen, vertical accent, or focal point in a mixed planting. Its fine-textured foliage provides year-round structure and works particularly well in woodland gardens, Japanese-inspired landscapes, and collections of conifers. Give it room to develop its characteristic branching rather than treating it as a tightly sheared hedge plant.
Mature Size: Approximately 10–15’ tall × 4–6’ wide
Growth Rate: Slow
Soil: Best in moist, well-drained soil
Uses: Specimen, vertical accent, woodland gardens, conifer collections, foundation planting
